I break tradition by reviewing the first story, planning to edit as I finish three more stories. Set one hundred years ago, this is the tale of a patricide, two Scotland Yard detectives, and the writers eloquent mirth, mischief and mayhem. "the strange tale of Mortimore Fenley" is superb in its characterizations of old English grammar, history and logic. Indeed, this story is worthy of the price, which is why I boldly challenge you to read this in one sitting; I don't think you can (but you will want to). You are told the murderer early on, and the plot thickens as you watch it unfold, and even at the end you want more, so it is fortunate the author has more than one tale to tell in this set. I will edit and add after more reading, but since the first story is so good, why wait on review?

8 British Detective Novels Box Set edition by Louis Tracy R Austin Freeman Edgar Wallace JS Fletcher Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I have read the first two mysteries and they are by the same author. I find the language stilted. I am too aware of the author and he chooses larger words when more common language would be suitable. I feel all the characters have the same extended vocabulary. They shouldn't. And yet there is an attempt at social distinction by the use of vernacular pronunciation, if there is such a thing. I have not liked these first two since I am too aware of the author. If the story takes flight and moves well and organically, then we shouldn't be aware of the author at all. She or he should disappear.
Each story completely stands on it's own and are very good mysteries. Two stories did have two of the same characters but the stories themselves did not overlap. The "villains" in each story were surprises and that always makes for a satisfying mystery. If you like mysteries of this era then you will enjoy each of these eight stories. Each of these did a good job of "fleshing" out the main characters and I like those stories makes me feel more involved in the outcome.
I'm going through a period of craving the really old murder mysteries. This collection of 8 novels by writers I had barely heard of is great. I am fascinated at the difference between our modern investigative techniques of forensic science, preserving crime scenes and individual interviewing and the old techniques of allowing family and witnesses to walk around the crime scene, be interviewed en mass and guess work of what possible evidence could mean. Of course the writing is amazing since the audience at the time were educated people only. These are very literate curiosity pieces with a look at the society of the time. I highly recommend it.
I loved reading the whole set. The phrasing and terminology with their sometime obscure meaning created an atmosphere of the Victorian age we've left behind. The atmosphere of the time was vividly captured in every way in speech, in dress and in attitude. I mark these as among the few I call best, top notch, top shelf or any other, signifying quality!!
This is a collection of good old-fashioned detective stories, where the point of the story is to figure out who committed the crime, and how and why. These stories are around 100 years old, and the language is Victorian English -- a beautiful language, but unfamiliar to many people today. However, it doesn't take long to get used to it, and getting used to it is definitely worth the effort. There are 8 stories, two by each of 4 authors. Each is self-contained, not depending on any of the others. If you want car chases and gun-fights, read something else. If you want real people, living in Victorian England and trying solve a problem, this is for you.
I like British Detective stories. I can count on great use of language , and description. This series hit my button.
First I have to vent and say how much I dislike buttons. The stories ranged from good to OK and there is no button for that.

The stories in this series of "8 British Detective Stories" are interesting. They are written in a very old style that reminds me of old Victorian stories or 1930's stories that include a lot of dialogue and where the final clues of the mystery are hidden until the very end when the primary detective suddenly explains it all. Similar to Joe Friday in the old TV show "Dragnet" who always summed up the solution to the mystery at the end. Some of the stories were very good but they are sometimes tedious to read especially when the main character telling the story can be so obtuse about what is happening. But then, reading between the lines of human nature, it is easy to understand how people seem to respond in ways that don't make sense even when they know they are in danger. It takes me a lot longer to read these stories because of the writing style but it is also fun to read stories that were the vanguard of todays mysteries and see how far writing styles have changed. What hasn't changed is the continued interest in murder mysteries and the weird things that can happen once the author's imagination takes off and the investigation begins.
